Thammasat and University of Akureyri Explore Academic Collaboration

On 21 July 2026, Dr. Usanee Patapsikij Lertrattananon, Assistant to the Rector for International Affairs, welcomed Prof. Dr. Hilmar Þór Hilmarsson, Professor of Economics from University of Akureyri (UNAK), Iceland, to the Office of International Affairs at Thammasat’s Tha Prachan Campus. 

During the meeting, Dr. Hilmar presented an overview of the University of Akureyri, highlighting its academic profile, student population, and key areas of expertise. He emphasized the university’s internationally recognized strengths in Arctic studies and climate change, as well as its research excellence in international security, great power competition, European integration, and NATO studies. 

To further strengthen academic cooperation, Prof. Hilmar expressed interest in exploring potential partnerships through the Erasmus+ programme. Possilble areas of collaboration included a two-week visiting professor initiative and student mobility opportunities. In response, the Assistant to the Rector of Thammasat University signaled the university’s readiness to cooperate and outlined possible frameworks and avenues for establishing and expanding the academic partnership. 

This visit marked a significant step toward building stronger academic ties between Thammasat University and the University of Akureyri, creating mutually beneficial opportunities for both students and faculty.
