The Asian International Mobility for Students (AIMS) programme, formally known as M-I-T, aims to create a vibrant student mobility programme for citizens of all SEAMEO member countries. It has a long history, emerging from the Malaysia-Indonesia-Thailand (M-I-T)Student Mobility Pilot Project which was initiated in 2009 as collaboration between the governments of the three countries and SEAMEO RIHED. The M-I-T project was a pilot project. Following the success of the pilot project, it is now being turned into a fully-fledged Asian programme. Additional Southeast Asian nations are now invited to join the efforts of the three existing countries, and collectively develop a regional Southeast Asian student mobility programme. This section provides a background to the student mobility pilot project, including key partners, objective and key events.
Asian International Mobility for Students (AIMS) Programme has been at the core of SEAMEO RIHED’s educational programmes as indicated in our 4th Five-Year Development Plan to cultivate globalized human resources. To SEAMEO RIHED, student mobility has always been one of the key strategic elements of cooperation leading to the development of a harmonised higher education environment among countries in Southeast Asia. By 2015, it has been ambitiously agreed as a short-term goal among AIMS member countries that at least 500 students will be mobilised across the region, with expanding disciplines as well as membership.

The ASEAN – European Academic University Network (ASEA-UNINET) is a network of universities, consisting of European and South-East Asian universities with the goal of promoting the continuous internationalization of education and research. ASEA-UNINET was founded in 1994 by universities from Austria, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam as Austrian-South-East Asian University Network and consists today of more than 90 universities from 16 different countries.
Every year more than 80 bilateral and multilateral ASEA-UNINET research projects are conducted. Joint research labs in different academic areas have formed over the years and new ones are started. Furthermore, PhD and Post-Doc scholarships are granted to students and researchers. In addition, international workshops, conferences, summer/winter schools as well as networking events are organized on a regular basis, the latter often in close cooperation with embassies and representatives of politics and economy.
Besides the scientific focus of ASEA-UNINET, the network is characterized by the very tight personal relations of its participants. It is not without reason that one speaks about the ASEA-UNINET family. All projects are based on voluntary involvement of the participating researchers, emphasizing their individual and scientific enrichment. The promotion of scientific, cultural and human relationships as well as personal contacts, scientific findings and collaboration are part of the mission of ASEA-UNINET.
The World University Association for Community Development (WUACD) aims to enhance its impact by offering programs aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). One strategy to achieve this is through partnerships with international colleges and institutions, particularly through student programs. These programs offer students the opportunity to learn directly from communities and gain practical experience. They also facilitate the exchange of cultural practices, broadening students’ perspectives and providing insights into different societal functioning.
Objectives of the program are applying research findings to the targeted community, enhancing university reputation through collaborative global programs aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), fostering closer ties among WUACD members and creating opportunities for potential international partnerships, promoting deeper engagement between the university and the local community.
